Our area: Le Tegnue
Local fishermen have always called the underground rocks in the Northern Adriatic "Tegnùe", for their ability to capture and break nets. The Tegnùe are true natural reefs, different from tropical reefs, as they are not made of coral, but of calcareous algae called "corallinacee". The Tegnue in Chioggia are large (over 25 km•) and divers can appreciate the great variety of life forms that populate this seabed. The most striking, in their shapes and colours, are the sponges, colonial sea squirts and anemones. The rocks swarm with bristle stars and crustaceans, small hermit crabs and majestic lobsters. The fish include conger eels, meagers, damselfish, brown combers and scorpion fishes. The naturalistic value of this habitat was recognised and protected by the creation, in August 2002 of a Protected Biological Areas, which introduced a ban on fishing. Twelve luminous buoys testify to the existence of the reserve, by mooring to these buoys and diving along the specially prepared guided route, divers can reach the most interesting points and diving also becomes safer. The “Tegnue di Chioggia” Charitable Association works to safeguard and promote this unique environment. The Internet site www.tegnue.it shows the names of diving schools that can take you to the area and offers a multi-lingual video in streaming, entitled “The Underwater Colours of Chioggia”, to give you a glimpse of the beauty of this unique Mediterranean seabed.
