Our area: Sottomarina

The renowned beach has very special sand, made of Dolomitic quartz rock, ferrous minerals and micaceous elements that increase the action of the sun and produce a more rapid, deeper tan. In ancient times it was called Clodia Minor (Chioggia minor) and was much smaller than it is now. In fact, it was only the area that is today called "Marina Vecia", an area of vegetable gardens and traditional dwellings well-known in those days for their quality and beauty. It was destroyed in the "War of Chioggia" and remained only an area of cultivation for over two centuries. The remains of the ancient "murazzi" (embankments), erected by the Venitians, are important in understanding where the sea came to in the past. They were the starting point for the repopulation of the area and are visible in Viale San Marco and around Forte S.Felice, a symbolic divide between the ancient "Marina Vecia" and the modern town. Today, the wide range of services for tourists, modern, well-equipped beach concessions, hotels, restaurants, bars and other places for entertainment, make it a widely appreciated tourist destination. The inhabitants belong almost exclusively to two families: the Boscolo and the Tiozzo, who were long dedicated to agriculture, with the production of typical products, including the famous "Chioggia chicory" and worshipped the "Madonna della Navicella" (Madonna of the Boat), also known as the "Madonna di Marina", who appeared on 24th June 1508.

Very wide and almost 6 km long, reaching out for another 3 km the other side of the Brenta River up to the mouth of the Adige, the beach is particularly rich in iodine. The constant light breeze, the sand conformation that accentuates the sun's radiation and the high saline concentration of the water, make Sottomarina Lido the ideal location for those looking for beach with therapeutic properties suitable for everyone.
